Biliran firms trained on Food Safety and GMP

DOST Biliran PSTC in coordination with the Eastern Visayas Food Safety Team successfully conducted a training on Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices to the beneficiaries of the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program in the Province of Biliran. The activity was held at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-Cabucgayan National School of Arts and Trades (TESDA-CNSAT)'s Food and Beverage Service Workshop Room on November 16-17, 2020.

The activity is part of DOST-8's commitment to assist the food micro enterprises who availed of DOST-SETUP so that their food processing plants will comply to basic food safety and GMP requirements and to help them obtain License to Operate (LTO) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The training consists of a series of lectures about Food Hazards and how to prevent them in the processing area. It also covered the areas under the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as stipulated in RA 10611 or the Food Safety Regulations. The participants were able to understand the needed preparations for their processing plants in order to comply with the requirements for FDA-LTO . To gain practical application of their learnings, the participants were required to assess an existing processing facility of a SETUP beneficiary and give oral reports of their findings.

A total of 5 firms joined the training due to limitations as a requirement of health protocols practicing social distance and observing the use of personals protections such as masks and others.

The members of the EVFST from the Province of Biliran namely: Ms. Juliet Aguirre, a BS Biology graduate and Dr. Romeo L. Dignos, an MS in Food Science and Technology graduate both served as speakers during the training.
