NSU launches Food Research and Development Center

The President of Naval State University, Dr. Victo C. Cañezo, Jr. leads the Inauguration and Ribbon Cutting ceremony of the first Food Research and Development Centre (FRDC) in the Province of Biliran, situated in its main campus, last January 28, 2019. The newly opened FRDC is a collaborative project between the Department of Science and Technology, The Department of Trade and Industry, and NSU. It is situated at the right wing of the NSU-Hostel.

Dr. Cañezo, warmly expressed his gratitude to the project partners and everyone who joined the event through his welcome message. He said that the FRDC will not only help the community in producing tested and quality products but will also serve as a training ground for the young, aspiring food scientists of the school.
Engr. Edgardo M. Esperancilla, Regional Director of DOST-8 was among the important science and technology personality invited as guest in the ceremony. However, in his absence due to conflicting schedules he was ably represented by Engr. Ramil T. Uy, Sr. SRS of DOST 8, together with Dr. Romeo L. Dignos, Provincial S&T Director-Biliran.

Members of the target beneficiaries under the DTI Shared Service Facility project which include Ms. Virgie Lacar and Ms. Maria Canete, from the Naval Suman Makers Association were also present during the event.

Engr. Celerina T. Bato, Regional Director of the Department of Trade and Industry Regional Office 8, was also present and gave her message with praises for the suman makers of the province who, according to her, made the best suman she ever tasted.

Engr. Uy delivered the message of  Director Esperancilla for the closing remarks, highlighting potential developments that the FRDC can provide to the food industry such as increasing the shelf life of suman from 5 days to 6-12 months. Engr. Uy further encouraged the association to develop their products and penetrate the international market for Biliran to be known as the best suman maker in the world.

To end the program with claps and awes, the NSU Panamaw Dance Company performed a special number.
