DOST-8 improves packaging of Biliran products

The Department of Science and Technology Region VIII in partnership with the Packaging Technology Division of the Industrial Technology Development Institute of DOST assisted several organized groups in Biliran Province in improving their product through the infusion of label design improvement as well as procurement of initial stock of packaging materials using their developed designs.

The assistance was part of the package of support to community based endeavors in the local area, particularly to registered associations and cooperatives that were affected by ST Yolanda in 2013. The project was funded by the Yolanda Rehabilitation and Recovery Program.The DOST released the packaging materials to the respective beneficiaries from April to June 2019.

The beneficiaries include Imelda Agrarian Reform Cooperative (IMARCO)  in Brgy. Imelda, Naval, Biliran for their native delicacies processing project. This project is in partnership with the Department of Agrarian Reform Biliran Field Office.

The Women's Organization for Rural Development-Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipino (WORD-KALIPI) Biliran Province chapter likewise received packaging materials for their complementary food product. DOST-8 partners with the provincial government through the Provincial Social Welfare & Development Office for this project.

Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) main campus in Naval, Biliran collaborated with DOST and DTI Biliran in the establishment of Food Research and Development Center and one of the support component from DOST is the provision of packaging materials for the improvement of Naval Suman Maker's Association's products.

In Cabucgayan, the DOST-8 partnered with the LGU to assist the Cabucgayan Farmers Association on their adlai production. Sticker labelled high density polyethylene bags for 1kg adlai grains was provided as packaging for the said product.

The packaging materials would be able to enhance the value of the finished product through increased shelf-life, convenient handling, better presentation, and makes the product safe from physical and other microbial contaminants.

The materials provided would be enough for at least 6 months production at the given capacity for each group.  Subsequent procurement of packaging materials will be shouldered by the association should they continue to adopt the packaging design.
